BIO

Beatriz Churruca

I am an artist and activist, currently based in the Basque Country, having previously lived in several beautiful places. From late 2019 to early 2025, I enjoyed rural life in Provence, France.

I hold a degree in Fine Arts, specialising in Painting (University of Barcelona), with a preference for large-scale works that are physically demanding. I have always explored the body and its movement, a facilitating vehicle and a subject of inquiry in constant flux. I have trained in dance alongside my art and understand the language of the body; for me, dancing is essential.

I create in response to what I observe in nature, human behaviour or social disorder. My artistic practice serves to create a distance from reality. I am not so concerned with the specific form it takes, but rather with everything that happens in the process; I enjoy paying attention to detail and working with my hands.

In 2013, after a few years of mutual observation, I decided to take part in all the processes of the dance company Cielo rasO (San Sebastián), directed by Igor Calonge, with whom I shared the early stages of his choreographic work; this collaboration is still ongoing.

In 2021, whilst living in France, I began to get involved in the projects of the French cultural association AstaKardu (La Roche-sur-le-Buis, Drôme) to contribute to that rural community. Thus, I led several workshops, proposed artistic exchanges and worked as an art tutor at the MFR des Baronnies vocational training centre.

Since April 2025, alongside Borja Ruiz and Germán Castañeda, I have co-directed La Fundición (Bilbao), a performing arts venue specialising in dance dedicated to performance, promotion, support for creation, internationalisation and raising awareness. This team is also responsible for the annual Lekuz Leku festival, featuring dance in urban landscapes, and for Dantzaldia, the International Dance Festival held in various partner venues across the city of Bilbao.
